4 Blockchain Based Chat Messenger Apps 2019

Blockchain has been the buzzword of 2018. For the uninitiated, let me break it down in simpler terms. The blockchain is a decentralized ledger of transactions recorded using cryptography. The entries or blocks are then distributed across many computers running on nodes in a P2P environment making it impossible to alter the information later.

Blockchain was designed to be used mainly in the financial sector of digital cryptocurrency. It has since then evolved to record anything of value, create self-executing smart contracts, and build decentralized apps (DApps) like chat messengers.

Why not use Discord or Telegram? Because though secure and encrypted (only Telegram), these apps are still centralized and owned by a single entity who may choose to do what they deem fit. This creates trust issues. Decentralization is the road ahead.
BENEFITS OF BLOCKCHAIN

Blockchain offers many advantages over traditional systems. First is immutability. Once something gets recorded, it is almost impossible to change it because a decentralised database of computers and blocks are involved.

Because information blocks are shared and stored across a network of nodes run by people, no single person or entity has complete control over it. This reduces the risk of one person or entity manipulating the records without others knowing about it.

It also eliminates the risk of a single point of failure. If all your data is stored in a single system and the system fails, you lose everything. Distributed ledger eliminates this risk. Each encrypted entry is visible for everyone to assess, bringing transparency and accountability to the system.

Finally, the new generation chat apps are also integrating cryptocurrency wallets into their offering. This allows users to send and receive money, just like messages, only freely or with minimal transaction and processing fees.

A race is on with a slew of Blockchain-based chat messenger apps that offer features like security, privacy, and P2P currency. Here are four such apps that you should check out.
1. DUST

Dust is a blockchain-based messaging app built by Radical App, a company advised by billionaire investor Mark Cuban. The idea is to create a platform that rewards good behavior and punishes the bullies. How? Dust will issue tokens (GMT - Global Messaging Tokens) that will cost more for users who abuse the system. Users can reward each other for creating value by sharing useful stuff. I saw Mashable posting news stories on Dust! Can Dust be used as a chat messenger and a news hub?

Another selling point is a Snapchat-like feature where every message you send will be deleted upon being read or within 24 hours. You can change this in the settings. The protocol is app agnostic, meaning it will allow users with different apps to connect and share without having to be on the same platform. Imagine being able to send a message via WhatsApp to WeChat! The dev team has recently released the Mercury Protocol that makes all of this possible.

Other features include the ability to delete messages from receiver’s phone, screenshot notification, and a no-name policy where the user’s name is not displayed in group chats. Dust is available on both Android and iOS platform.

2. STATUS

Similar to Dust, Status is also a privacy-focused and blockchain-based chat messenger that uses the Ethereum platform. The in-app messages are end-to-end encrypted (Whisper Protocol). To make sure that absolutely no breadcrumbs are left behind, Status will open all links inside its built-in browser in the privacy mode. This means no one knows which site you just visited.

Being an Ethereum project with an ERC-20 token, Status comes with an Ethereum wallet that you can use to send and receive ERC-20 tokens and track transactions on the blockchain. To make things more transparent, Status has made its code open-source.

Status, still in beta, wants to be an all-in-one solution for chatting, browsing and transacting with people in real time. They are looking to create an ecosystem. You can download the app and test it.

3. E-CHAT

e-Chat is a messaging app with a Status-like vision where you can send and receive not just messages, but also payments using a P2P environment. e-Chat comes with a multi-currency wallet. ECHT is their native token, and is based on Ethereum.

Other features include the ability to make voice calls to up to 10 people, HD video calls, and text messages. The ability to publish and monetize content is where e-Chat wants to differentiate itself. e-Chat says bloggers will be able to publish content in different formats to create an additional revenue stream for themselves.

Finally, there is an Instagram-like tab where you can upload media (e-Chat calls them Moments) and users can show their appreciation by tipping you with ECHT tokens. Maybe Instagram users will like it.

Note that unlike Dust, e-Chat allows taking screenshots easily. It is more focused on creating a community than privacy and security in my personal opinion; however, these are still its early days.

4. BEECHAT

South Korea based BeeChat wants to build an ecosystem of apps based on blockchain. BeeChat has attracted millions of users in a relatively short period. BeeChat is a chat messenger app that will let you send text, audio, and video messages. Like several blockchain based messenger apps, BeeChat also comes with a cryptocurrency wallet that supports 12 different currencies at the moment.

Taking things to the next level, BeeChat is cross-chain compatible which means you are free to use other mainnets like EOS and Ethereum to store your encrypted data. Fans of Telegram will be happy to know that BeeChat supports the former’s protocol, enabling users to cross-match contacts. Telegram sent me a verification code the moment I signed in to BeeChat.

Following Telegram’s footsteps, BeeChat has attracted many blockchain companies to create their own channels on the app where they share news and updates about their projects and ICOs.

IN CODE WE TRUST

There are talks of several other projects in the pipeline who are working on creating secure and privacy-focused chat messenger apps within their small ecosystems. Maybe the golden age of social media is transitioning to the next level? Of course, more security and privacy based messaging apps are welcome. But by how many? Only time will tell.

Top 3 Windows 10 Apps to Generate 2-Factor Authentication Codes 2019

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a method of bumping up user account security by requiring two means of identity verification.

Typically when you're logging into your account, you will have to provide a password. The 2FA requires another piece of information in the form of a code that you must enter before a website grants you access to your user account. This code is usually sent via text message or generated using an app on your phone.

Instead of using an app, you can generate 2FA codes directly on your Windows 10 computer. There are a few apps out there that can accommodate this.

Before we jump into reviewing these apps, let's take a closer look at why 2FA is essential.
WHY USE 2FA?

Many services won't even let you sign up if you don't create a strong password containing at least 6 characters which are a mix of lowercase and uppercase letters with symbols and numbers thrown in there as well.

For this reason, you might be wondering why it's even necessary to go through the hassle of setting up 2FA. Well, the fact is that these days hackers are quite persistent in finding loopholes to steal user credentials. Once they steal the login credentials data, the data dump is usually up for sale in the darker corners of the web.

One of the most common goals of a cyber attack by hackers is to access users' credit card information. With access to this information, hackers can then use it to go on shopping sprees.

This year alone, some major breaches involving credit card information have occurred. Hackers also get up to other malicious activities like accessing the sensitive information of governments. The point of all of this is to illustrate the need to ensure that we protect our user accounts since there is usually sensitive data stored in them that could be used against us if accessed by a hacker.

2FA puts another barrier of defense, other than your password, between you and hackers. Even if a hacker accesses your password of a 2FA protected account, they will not be able to log in to your account without the 2FA codes. For example, if you are using Google's Authenticator app on your phone, unless the hacker also has your phone, they will not be able to access the account.

The Google Authenticator is a popular choice for 2FA needs, but some of us don't always carry our phones. If you use a Windows 10 machine, it might be more practical to have your 2FA code generated directly on the computer.

That said, take a look at the three Windows 10 applications which will let you generate 2FA codes.

1. AUTHY

Authy is relatively straightforward to use. When setting it up initially, you will need to enter your phone number into the app. You will then be sent a verification code via text message.

After completing the verification process, you can now start adding your services. Simply select the plus sign to get started adding services.

You will now need to access the settings of the user account you want to set up 2FA for. There will be an option in the service's user account settings area which will guide you through the process. Take Facebook, for example. If you go to Facebook's settings and select Security and Login, there will be an option called Use two-factor authentication that you can pick. The app will guide you through the setup process.

You will need to enter the secret key provided by the service you're setting up before you can start generating 2FA codes. After completing the setup process, you will now be able to see generated 2FA codes which are refreshed every few seconds in Authy.

This process is quite similar across all services which allow 2FA. The next time you need to log in to the 2FA-secured accounts, you will be asked to enter your 2FA code. Here is what this looks like with Facebook.

Download Authy

2 FACTOR AUTHENTICATOR

To get started with 2 Factor Authenticator, select the add button and enter the name of the account you're trying to add and the secret key. The Authy section above explains that accessing the secret key for a service is relatively uniform across the board. It is available under the user account settings sections of services under sections related to security and passwords.

Using this app, you can either enter a secret key or scan the QR code if your Windows 10 device can accommodate it.

Download 2 Factor Authenticator
WINAUTH

WinAuth is a portable Windows 10 app which comes with options for quickly setting up a few default services. These are Google, Microsoft, Battle.Net, Guild Wars 2, Glyph / Trion, and Steam. It also allows for setting up 2FA codes by importing a previous WinAuth configuration.

If you aren't using any of the above services/options, after selecting the Add option, select the Authenticator menu option to add other services. You can now enter the secret key provided by the service you're setting up with 2FA.

After completing the setup process, you will be asked to set up further protection for your 2FA codes within WinAuth, and we recommend setting a password. Alternatively, you can encrypt the 2FA information so that it's usable only on your computer. There is also the option of locking WinAuth 2FA information with a YubiKey which is a physical device that supports the 2FA process.

Download WinAuth
FINAL THOUGHTS

If you are serious about privacy and security of your data, use the 2FA codes for your accounts. WinAuth, 2 Factor Authenticator, and Authy are all excellent options for generating 2FA codes on Windows 10. Note that WinAuth is a portable app, 2 Factor Authenticator is a Microsoft Store app, and Authy is a desktop app. That means that the download and installation process of each of these 3 apps is different.

Hackers stole user account data of nearly 50 million Facebook users by using a loophole in an innocent looking app that wishes on birthdays. So you can imagine how crucial it is to choose 2FA wherever supported to protect your login credentials and data.

How to Recover WhatsApp Messages without Google Drive 2018

How to Recover WhatsApp Messages without Google Drive 2018

I am part of a lot of WhatsApp groups and often delete messages as well as attachments to maintain my sanity and also reclaim storage space. I am not a big fan of forwarding messages that add little value to my life. While deleting messages is easy, what happens when you remove something useful by mistake?

WhatsApp recently announced that backups made to Google Drive will not be counted towards your storage limit. Before you jump for joy, note that your WhatsApp Backups in Google Drive will not be encrypted. While some are worried about the privacy of their data, others may not be aware of this yet.

So, how to restore WhatsApp messages when you have no backups in Google Drive? Let’s find out.
1. RESTORE WHATSAPP MESSAGES ON ANDROID

Not many people know that WhatsApp makes a local backup of your data every day at 2:00 AM (set by default). Note that the local backup will be a day old depending on the time you decide to restore it. If for any reason you have to reset your phone to factory settings or WhatsApp starts acting up, follow this process.

Also Read: How to Change Your Phone Number On WhatsApp

First, you need to uninstall WhatsApp. Then go to the Play Store and reinstall it again. When you do that, WhatsApp will take you through the verification process where you will receive a 6-digit code. Enter it and continue.

After the verification is done, WhatsApp will automatically look for a backup on your phone. You will be asked to restore messages and files from the available backup. More importantly, you will be able to see when the backup was made and its size. In my case, it was 10 minutes ago because I manually did it — check the screenshots below. I don’t want to lose precious data.

You can tap on Restore to begin the process.

After the backup is restored, you will be notified about the number of messages restored. Tap Next to continue. You can now add your name and set a photo as your profile picture.

Download WhatsApp
2. RESTORE WHATSAPP MESSAGES ON ANDROID USING A FILE EXPLORER

As mentioned earlier, WhatsApp makes a local backup every day. The above method will restore the most recent backup by default. If you want to restore a different version, you will need a file explorer. I recommend Solid Explorer over ES File Explorer, but you can use any.

Launch the file explorer. Browse your phone's internal storage and look for this folder: /WhatsApp/databases. That's where all your WhatsApp backups are stored. Depending on your smartphone and your preferences, this folder can be located in internal or external memory.

If you are unable to find this folder structure, tap on the search icon and type ‘msgstore’ without quotes.

You will see several results in the following format: msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12.

You can now choose to restore any backup file based on the date. In the above screenshot, note that the first file (msgstore.db.crypt12) in the list has no date. That file is the most recent backup of WhatsApp messages. Before you proceed, make a copy of that file and move it to another folder. Now rename that latest backup file to anything you want.

Next, choose the backup file you wish to use for restoring messages, and remove the date (YYYY-MM-DD) part from the file name to make it look like a recent backup file (msgstore.db.crypt12).

In the previous section, WhatsApp found and restored a file. So you need to do the same. Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp, restore from backup, and check your data.

Tips: If there are no available backup for deleted or lost WhatsApp messages, you can recover deleted WhatsApp chat history ( including messages, photos, videos, audio files, and other attachments) from Android by using Gihosoft Free Android Data Recovery. It’s a professional Android file recovery software that enables you to deep scan and one-click recover all deleted or lost WhatsApp chat history from Android quickly.

Download Solid Explorer
3. RESTORE WHATSAPP MESSAGES ON IOS

While WhatsApp managed to ink a deal with Google, Apple refused to play nice. You cannot backup WhatsApp to Google Drive on your iPhone. All your backups are stored in the iCloud, and the frequency is the one that you selected inside the WhatsApp app.

By default, Auto Backup is set to Daily which means your WhatsApp chats are being backed up daily to the iCloud. To restore a backup from iCloud, you need to follow this process.

Uninstall WhatsApp from your iPhone. Use the link below to download it again from the App Store. You will be asked to verify your number with an OTP text message.

Once you have done it, WhatsApp will ask if you want to Restore from a recent backup or Skip. Tap on the Restore option on the upper-right corner. You can see the date and size of the backup file here.

Once the WhatsApp backup file has been restored, you can begin using the app.

Gihosoft Photo Eraser Erase unwanted objects and perfect your amazing photos!

If you lost data after you updated to a new iPhone, you can always use Gihosoft iPhone Data Recovery to get the data back from the old iPhone or backup.

Download WhatsApp
4. RESTORE WHATSAPP MESSAGES ON IOS USING ITUNES

If you are using iTunes to take regular backups of your smartphone, then you have nothing to fear. If not, well then, this is the end of the road for you, I am afraid. You must use either one to take backups on iPhone.

There is no way to restore via iTunes on an app-by-app basis. This means when you restore via iTunes, you will be restoring your entire iPhone, all the apps and their respective settings, along with WhatsApp. If you are ready and willing to go this route, here's how you can do it.

Connect your iPhone to your laptop, where you have iTunes installed, using the iPhone cable. Launch iTunes, and it should detect your iPhone automatically. You will be asked to unlock your iPhone. At this point, I would urge you to make a fresh backup, just in case.

Click on the device icon on the upper-left in iTunes.

This is where you can take new backups or restore from an old one. Use the drop-down menu to choose backup files based on date.

Once again, you are not just restoring WhatsApp data here but the entire contents of your iPhone like contacts, messages, and so on. I advise you to create a backup before you restore an old one.
WHAT'S UP WITH YOUR BACKUPS

There are a few ways to restore WhatsApp backups even without Google Drive, no matter which mobile OS you use. It shouldn't be that hard. If you are not using Google Drive to backup WhatsApp data, you should because it will make your life easier. If security is your primary concern, then local backups are your only alternative.
