Facebook and Xiaomi explored investment opportunities without yielding any results

Facebook has tried on multiple occasions to branch out in the mobile world, moving past a simple mobile application. Over three years ago, we saw the social network try to make its way into the mobile scene by partnering with HTC for the HTC Status, which gave users a Blackberry-like experience that offered a simple status update button that was only one touch away. Then in 2013, Facebook came out with the HTC First, which ran the new Facebook Home application that not many users were fond of. After AT&T sold off their remaining stock of the HTC handset because of poor sales, one could assume that Facebook would give up trying to breach the mobile device world.

However, in a new report from Reuters, Facebook discussed investment opportunities in Xiaomi in October 2014. When Mark Zuckerberg visited China late last year, he met up with Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun for dinner. The two met to discuss Facebook investing in Xiaomi, the Chinese-based smartphone manufacturer, which is currently estimated to be worth 45 billion dollars. During the discussion, the two CEOs talked about the political and commercial ramifications that go along with partnering with the social networking giant. Facebook has been banned in China since 2009, so if the deal had warranted any results, the entire situation would have been extremely controversial. Xiaomi has been on the risein the Chinese market for quite some time, and given the manufacturer’s good relations with Google and China, the company decided to pass on the investment opportunity.

Though the deal fell through, we now know that Facebook is actively trying to break into the Chinese market to expand their social networking site around the world. Xiaomi has been trying to expand their global marketshare for quite some time, and Facebook obviously wants to expand to China. It’s clear that both companies would benefit from working with one another, though in the end, the potential political issues outweighed expanding global marketshare for Xiaomi.

Update to Google Translate reportedly bringing automatic voice translation

Google Translate is quite handy when you’re in a pinch, but the app doesn’t come without its woes. When translating, it’s a bit slow and doesn’t really provide a natural conversation experience if you’re trying to communicate with someone that speaks a different language. According to The New York Times, the Translate app is getting an update that should fix those problems. The app will reportedly be able to recognize detected speech then translate it to text in real time to any language you’d like. This will offer a much more fluent experience for users who need something translated at a moment’s notice.

Also according to the report, Google is looking into releasing an app that can read text through the camera and translate it to multiple different languages. In case you forgot, Google purchased Quest Visual, the folks behind Word Lens, about eight months ago. Thanks to that acquisition, we knew something like this would eventually be released. But since this is a very difficult technology to develop, it is obviously taking a bit of time to launch.

No information has been disclosed on when the application will get the update, but we’ll be sure to let you know when updates start rolling out.

Xiaomi Redmi 2S leaks, sized up against the 1S

2014 was a great year for Chinese maker Xiaomi, the company shooting from near irrelevance to third smartphone manufacturer globally. It appears that the company isn’t wasting any time celebrating though as it’s already preparing to release its next hot seller.

The Xiaomi Redmi 2S has just leaked in several live shots and we even get to learn all of its key specs. The smartphone will sport dual LTE network support allowing it work in both its home market and abroad and will be built around a 4.7” 720p screen.

The chipset at the heart of the Redmi 2S will allegedly be a 64-bit Snapdragon 410 with a quad-core CPU running at 1.2GHz, Adreno 306 GPU and 1GB of RAM. Storage will be 8GB with the microSD card slot enabling further expansion.

The rear camera on the Redmi 2S will feature an 8MP sensor, while the front-facing snapper will be a 2MP unit. Android 4.4.4 KitKat will be what the Redmi 2S will run out of the box. Finally, we also got to learn that the will measure 134 x 67.21 x 9.2mm and weigh 132 grams.

First of all, it’s not a “third OS.” MIUI is a skin over Android, not much different from other skins. It’s “non-Google” in the way AOSP Android is. But you really think Xiaomi won’t get Google Certified and add Play Store if need be? Puhleeze. There were and still are craptabs with fall-apart hardware that got Certified.


Second, people raving about the ZTE Zmax phone shows that there is a market waiting for good low-cost hardware that’s unencumbered by a two-year contract (or massive marketing overhead costs, ahem). Perhaps Gruber has an inside word on how Apple is just waiting to pounce on Xiaomi and sue the shit out of them on various counts. This is business, not sports. Shit can always be worked out. How could Gruber forget perceived arch-enemy Microsoft investing in a flailing Apple when Jobs returned? Grow up.

Third, the rumors of Xiaomi entering the U.S. have been back and forth. They’re not listed as being an exhibitor at CES, so it’s doubtful they’ll introduce a Mi 5 there as rumored. This isn’t to preclude the possibility of Xiaomi having an off-site venue. But word would have leaked out about that. And if it’s a surprise waiting to be revealed, it’s going to be very hard to corral the press to it without virtually bribing them with free food, free rides, free stuff (but hey, that’s mostly what happens at CES, no?).

Fourth, setting aside the copycatism of Xiaomi, they’re still a company as aggressive as Amazon yet far less full of themselves as Apple. That combination has to worry anyone — perhaps especially Apple fanboiz. Xiaomi repeats again and again that they’re not Apple (despite the copycatism, etc), not a hardware company, but an Internet company. They began with MIUI, not a phone. In fact, in a recent article about the company, Lei Jun revealed he wanted to do a router first, not a phone. Xiaomi has a different playbook than anyone else.

Fifth, Gruber had better prepared to be shocked. Because if Xiaomi does enter the U.S. market this year, it will succeed. The days of off-contract phones with prices for the one-percent are coming to an end. Blu has pioneered that market but their plastic-ky phones with questionable support and doubtful prospects only cleared the way for higher-quality products from Xiaomi.
