K Cube Ventures, a VC firm responsible for two early stage funds, K Cube Venture Fund (US$11 million) and Kakao Venture Fund (US$30 million), has announced a US$700,000 investment into the mobile game developer A-33 Studio.
A-33 Studio is a new startup. CEO Dong-sun Kim managed the development of Nexon’s Counter Strike Online and was deeply involved in that company’s new PC and mobile projects before moving on to A-33. So it is no surprise that the studio will also be focusing on mobile first-person shooters (FPS).
According to beSUCCESS, A-33 will release its first title by the end of 2015. Presently codenamed Project S, the game aims to enhance the online mobile FPS experience by “integrating a fully-optimized user interface along with innovative controls, to overcome common issues users face while playing FPS games on mobile.” Project S is also expected to have a squad management system that will deliver a “unique style of real-time battles.”
CEO Kim says he plans for Project S to “set a whole new standard of mobile FPS game.”
A K Cube Ventures representative says that the VC is “impressed” with the studio’s experience in game development and “unparalleled capability in the FPS field,” honed from work on Counter Strike Online and Combat Arms. A-33 Studio’s team also has experience getting domestic and international exposure for games, and this will suit its global expansion strategy well.
Ki-jun Kim, a partner at K Cube Ventures, says that they predicts A-33 will become a leader that “revolutionizes this market and diversifies the mobile genre.”
